The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dispatched all electoral materials to the constituency centres for its constituency executive elections slated for today and tomorrow.
The elections will be conducted by officials of the Electoral Commission (EC), while election committees of the party will coordinate and monitor the elections.
About 15,000 aspirants are seeking various constituency executive positions, including chairman, vice-chairman, secretary, treasurer, organiser, deputy organiser, communications officer, women’s organiser and youth organiser under the party’s structure.
Candidates
The Spokesperson for the Congress Elections Committee, Dr Peter Boamah Otokunor, told the Daily Graphic that 15,000 aspirants were expected to contest for the constituency executive position in 276 constituencies across the country.
He said party officials met with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, and his operations team last Monday for the Ghana Police Service to take charge of security at all the polling station.
Throwing more light on it, the Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Theodore Hlormenu, told the Daily Graphic that following the meeting with NDC officials, the IGP held a meeting with all regional commanders to brief them about the elections.
He said the IGP directed the regional commanders to get personally involved to ensure maximum security.
DCOP Hlormenu said the police would be providing security not only at the voting centres but also escorting electoral materials to and from the voting centres, while protecting EC officials.
Deployment
Mr Hlormenu said aside from the standby teams at the voting centres, there would be police patrol teams and the deployment of personnel of the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) to gather intelligence as part of police proactiveness.
He said the NDC had also given the police a number of flashpoints to look out for troublemakers.
DCOP Hlormenu said in such areas, the police would deploy heavily on the grounds and warned troublemakers to stay out of reach.
Mr Hlormenu gave the assurance that the police would be there to protect delegates as well, therefore, he urged them to vote peacefully and leave the voting centres.
Dr Otokunor, who is also the Director of Presidential Initiatives on Agriculture and Agribusiness, explained that the elections formed part of the party’s internal reorganisation ahead of the 2028 general election and will determine the leadership of its structures at the constituency level.
Grassroots affairs
Dr Otokunor said the exercise was expected to produce solid constituency executives to manage the party’s affairs at the grassroots and coordinate its political and organisational activities ahead of the 2028 general election.
He urged all aspirants and members to conduct themselves with discipline, decorum and respect for its democratic values throughout the electoral process.
He said the cooperation and support of members would be crucial to ensuring a transparent, peaceful, orderly and successful election.
Dr Otokunor, who is also a former Deputy General Secretary of the party, said the constituency elections would be followed by the regional executive elections on November 14 and 15, 2026.
The regional elections will be preceded by the Regional Youth and Women Conference on November 13 this year.
