Make Wa hospital, others operational — Mahama

The 2020 Presidential Candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), former President John Dramani Mahama, has asked the government to ensure the full operationalisation of the Upper West Regional hospital in Wa.

That, he said, would ensure that as a referral facility, the hospital could adequately address the health needs of the people in the region.

“He said since he President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo inaugurated the hospital, it has not been given seed money to operate fully. “And so, it is not operating at full capacity. That is supposed to be the regional hospital, the major referral hospital for the people of the Upper West” he said.

Tour

He was speaking during a courtesy call on the Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, last Monday as part of his ‘thank you’ tour of the region.

Apart from meeting other stakeholders and NDC party executives, Mr Mahama also visited Nadowli to sympathise with victims of the recent flooding disaster in the region.

The former President donated relief items including bags of rice and cement, gallons of cooking oil and roofing sheets to some of the victims.

He was accompanied by his running mate, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the national chairman of the NDC, Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo and the NDC parliamentary candidates in the region.

COVID-19

With the COVID-19 pandemic stretching the nation’s existing health facilities, the former President called for re-prioritisation of all such projects that were ready to be used.

“While we think about building more hospitals, we must quickly utilise the capacity that we have already. Because it will be a lack of prioritisation if you have a wholly built regional hospital with all equipment that you need there and you can't operationalise it and yet prioritise the construction of new hospitals," he stated.

Wa Naa

Naa Pelpuo commended Mr Mhama for the various social amenities and infrastructural facilities which were constructed during his tenure of office.

He, however, expressed regret that some of the E-blocks Senior High School (SHS), which were at various stages of completion, were yet to be completed, in spite of the huge number of students seeking education due to the free SHS policy.
