An aspiring New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Nandom, Alois Mohl, has urged delegates to choose candidates based on competence, loyalty and the ability to create opportunities rather than the financial strength of candidates.
He said the NPP’s parliamentary primaries should not become a contest of wealth and warned that allowing money to determine who becomes a parliamentary candidate can undermine the principles and philosophy of the party.
Mr Mohl said this at the official declaration of his intention to contest the NPP parliamentary primary in the Nandom Constituency when the process starts.
“It is both very refreshing and sad that today, the NPP in Nandom is so attractive that I hear some people say that only those with money will be parliamentary candidates.”
“Let us be careful, otherwise, very soon, strangers will come with cash and hijack this party and destroy the principles that underpin our party’s philosophy.”
Mr Mohl explained that the NPP's fundamental principle was to create opportunities for individuals to become prosperous, rather than to encourage people to display their wealth as a basis for political leadership.
He stressed that his interest in the contest was to use his ideas, experience and networks to create opportunities for the people rather than win support by distributing money.
“My wealth is not paper money or hard currency wealth.
My wealth is social capital.
That is the kind of wealth Nandom needs, so that they can be assisted to grow their own wealth, Mr Mohl said.
He observed that leadership was critical to the party's fortunes in the Nandom Constituency, particularly after it lost the seat in the 2024 elections, which he attributed partly to unresolved misunderstandings within the party.
Leadership change
Mr Mohl, therefore, argued that the NPP needed a change in leadership to rebuild unity and position itself to win back the constituency in 2028 and said he would restore unity and rebuild the party by putting the collective interest of the party above his personal interest if elected.
He said his record of working for the party, including his involvement in grassroots mobilisation, reconciliation and welfare activities, demonstrated his commitment to the NPP beyond electoral contests.
He pledged to pursue a leadership style that listens to members, acts on their concerns and delivers results.
As part of his vision for the party, Mr Mohl proposed a welfare scheme for party delegates in the constituency and a rapid response and reconciliation team to identify, mediate and resolve disputes at polling station levels.
He also identified education, health, agriculture and social welfare as the four key areas that would receive attention if he becomes the Member of Parliament of the area. — GNA
