Former Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) in the Volta Region who were not re-nominated for a second term have called on the Minister of Finance to settle the outstanding terminal benefits due to them.
A spokesperson for the former MDCEs and former MCE of Akatsi South, Leo-Nelson Adzidogah, said in an interview in Akatsi last Tuesday that at the beginning of the second term of President Akufo-Addo, the first-term MDCEs were instructed to stay on, pending the nominations of new MDCEs.
He said in October 2001, nominations were made and 134 MDCEs in the country were not re-nominated for the second term.
“Very unfortunately, we were not paid for the terminal benefits due to us even though we pursued the claim,” he told the Daily Graphic.
Mr Adzidogah said it was assumed that in the second term, the MDCEs would be paid together with their successors.
However, he said, their successors received their terminal benefits, but the former MDCEs were left out.
“It is pertinent to know that our colleagues who were re-nominated were paid for the same period we also served.
“It is, therefore, unfair to leave us out while our colleagues were paid,” the former Akatsi South MCE maintained.
He said their exit from office during and before the end of the second term should not be used to deny them their benefits.
“This is clearly an oversight and we humbly wish to draw the attention of the Minister of Finance to take due consideration of this situation and authorise the payment of our benefits,” Mr Adzidogah added.
