Exciting contest awaits NDC Ho constituency primary

Exciting dynamics are emerging in the Ho Constituency in the build-up to the primary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as not less than six party members have shown interest in contesting the parliamentary seat.

So far, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Benjamin Komla Kpodo, Mr Emmanuel Kafui Dzamefe, Mr Stanley Nelvis Glate, Mr Edem Kofi Kpotosu, Lawyer Gordon Akpadi and Mr Eric Bene are among people who are jostling to become the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2020 Election.

All the six aspirants are upbeat and are not leaving any stone unturned as they work to win the hearts and minds of the NDC delegates at the constituency.

Electoral fortunes

Since 1996, the NDC has won that seat six times. In 1996 it won by 74.1 per cent, 2000 by 83.3 per cent, 2004 by 84.8 per cent, 2008 by 87.0 per cent, 2012 by 88.5 per cent and 2016 by 79.48 per cent.

As a ‘world bank’ for the NDC, it is likely that whoever emerges the winner stands a good chance to become the Member of Parliament for the constituency.

Chances

Sharing his chances with the Daily Graphic in an interview in Accra last Tuesday, Mr Emmanuel Kafui Dzamefe said it was his time to annex the seat having served the party faithfully over the years.

Mr Dzamefe, who described himself as an astute leader and politician, said he had a better working knowledge of party affairs in the constituency.

He explained he had served and supported the NDC at the branch, constituency and regional levels through several means, including logistical, financial and advocacy.

He said he had also played a key role in party campaigns at the constituency and regional levels, which had all helped the party to win massively in national elections.

Mr Dzamefe added that due to his leadership skills, hard work and volunteerism, he had held many privileged positions in the party, including assembly member, chair of Works subcommittee and the Dutasor Zonal Council of the last assembly of the Ho Municipal Assembly, among others.

Mr Dzamefe is currently the Secretary of the Lume Kpodoave branch of the NDC in the Volta Region.

“Leadership and organisational skills are in my blood. Aside from that, I am a known face in the constituency because I was born and bred in Ho and started my early education there as well, which makes me a more preferred choice.

“Between 2012 and 2013, the then President, John Dramani Mahama, penciled me for the position of a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE). But for some gender issues I would have occupied that office,” he expounded.

Beyond politics, Mr Dzamefe said he had largely been with the corporate society and was currently the Senior Marketing Manager of Chemico Limited, an agriculture company.

Vision

Mr Dzamefe explained that his vision as an MP was to do all it took within his powers to push the agriculture sector in the constituency, as well as help tackle the menace of unemployment.

“I will touch base with the farmers and help them acquire technical training, as well as secure inputs such as chemicals for their work. I will also partner recruitment agencies and human resource companies  to provide jobs for the people,” he said.

He said education was key to development and would, therefore, organise symposiums and workshops for teachers to train and retrain them to ensure they delivered their best. That, he said, would improve the quality and style of knowledge sharing.

“As a gender activist, it is my vision to support women activists. I will provide facilitation for the provision of vocational and technical training for women to enable them to survive on their own,” he added.
