Leaders of the Convention People's Party (CPP) last Wednesday visited the family of the late Dr Kwame Nkrumah in Accra to commiserate with them over the death of his son, Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah.
The delegation, made up of the party's Council of Elders and National Working Committee, was led by the Vice-Chairman of the Council of Elders, Chris Ziga.
Gamal Nkrumah died peacefully in Cairo, Egypt, on October 14, 2026, aged 68, after a prolonged illness. He was buried in Cairo in line with Islamic tradition.
Family thanks governments
Welcoming the delegation, Samia Yaba Nkrumah and Sekou Nkrumah expressed deep sorrow over the loss of their brother, who spent most of his life in Egypt.
They thanked the governments of Ghana and Egypt for the love and support shown during his hospitalisation and burial.
They recalled that when the family was invited back to Ghana from exile by the Acheampong government, Gamal spent two years in school here, but circumstances did not allow him to enjoy his stay, and he left to continue his life abroad.
The delegation assured the family of the party's support when preparations for the final funeral rites in Ghana begin.
Who was Gamal?
Born in Accra in 1958 to Dr Nkrumah and his Egyptian wife, Fathia, Gamal taught development and economics in Zimbabwe before settling in Cairo.
He joined Al-Ahram Weekly in his early thirties and was part of its founding generation when the English-language paper launched in 1991.
His association with it spanned more than three decades, during which he wrote extensively on Africa and international affairs and rose to become editor for international affairs.
He left two children.
In a joint condolence message, the CPP described him as a distinguished journalist, writer, intellectual and Pan-Africanist who championed justice, human dignity and African unity.
"The CPP has lost a true son and a faithful custodian of Nkrumaism," the statement said.
The party extended condolences to Gamal's mother's family, Samia, Sekou, his two children and the entire Nkrumah family.
It also thanked the medical team in Cairo and the governments and people of Ghana and Egypt for supporting the family during his illness.
It said it awaits communication on memorial arrangements in Ghana to enable the party and the nation to pay fitting tribute.
