Adentan Constituency is on course — MP

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament (MP) for Adentan, Mohammed Adamu Ramadan, has assured constituents that the government, in collaboration with the Adentan Municipal Assembly, is committed to addressing the development needs of the municipality.

He said although the President Mahama-led government had been in office for less than two years, its development projects were already evident, urging residents not to panic.

Mr Ramadan made the remarks at a town hall meeting at Amanfro last Thursday on the theme: “Let’s come together, share ideas and build a better Adentan Municipality.”

The meeting brought together residents, traditional leaders, assembly members, community leaders, women organisations, development partners, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

Development agenda

Mr Ramadan said President Mahama had decided that 80 per cent of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) would be sent to the assemblies to accelerate development, rather than keeping a large portion of the fund in Accra.

He said the move was contributing to faster development at the assembly level.

He said road infrastructure remained one of the major challenges facing the Adentan Municipality but added that efforts were being made to fix the municipality’s 1,078 kilometres of roads, of which 158 kilometres had been tarred.

He added that the assembly was judiciously using its Internally Generated Fund (IGF) to support development needs.

Mr Ramadan, who is serving his second term, said the Adentan seat had previously been a one-term position for his predecessors, adding that his retention of the seat showed that constituents appreciated his work.

“What I have done for you to retain the seat, I shall continue to do it and you must also continue to believe in me,” he said.

Public participation

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Ella Esinam Christine Nongo, said the town hall meeting was important because it enabled residents to understand how the assembly operated and which departments to contact.

She said the MP and the assembly could not build what the Adentan residents wanted without their input, assuring that communities would be consulted before development projects are undertaken.

Departmental heads briefed participants on their mandates, while Linder Doreen Ashong of SSNIT educated formal and informal sector workers on the need to enrol on the scheme.

She also introduced the SSNIT Membership Value Programme, which offers active members, contributors and pensioners discounts through partnerships with Ecobank Ghana PLC and selected retail outlets.

Participants subsequently asked questions on the municipality’s development needs, which were addressed by the assembly's management and the MP.
