Ghana, Guinea strengthen collaboration

Ghana and Guinea have formed a joint commission for co-operation under which the two countries will foster closer collaboration in the energy sector.

Under the deal, Ghana will make its expertise in the energy sector available to the Republic of Guinea, which has a huge hydro-electric potential.

The President, Mr John Mahama, announced this on Thursday, when he proposed a toast at a State Banquet in honour of the visiting Guinean President, Prof Alpha Conde.

Mr Mahama said Ghana was also willing to share its experience in the mining sector and in the other areas in which it had expertise with Guinea, in view of the existing relations between them.

Liberation struggle

The President noted that Ghana and Guinea spearheaded the liberation of the rest of the African continent and described the late former Guinean President Ahmed Sekou Toure as “a fighter against exploitation and a true son of Africa”.

He indicated that Ghana shared a lot in common with Guinea, including being members of the ECOWAS and the fact that Guinea had an active extractive industry.

President Conde

Responding, President Conde recalled the long-standing relations between Ghana and Guinea which dated back to the 1960s.

He lauded the people of Ghana for their hard work over the years, adding, “The Ghanaian people must be proud, having advanced to a level of technology without outside help.”

“Any patriotic African should be proud to visit Ghana and see how the country has become,” he added.

President Conde called on Africans to unite to fulfill the dreams of Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Visit to Akosombo

Earlier in the day, President Mahama had conducted his Guinean counterpart round the Akosombo Dam, constructed by Ghana’s first President, Dr Nkrumah, who died in 1972.

That was after President Conde, together with his children, had joined Ghanaians to commemorate Ghana’s 57th Independence anniversary at the Black Star Square in Accra.
