Fighting corruption is collective effort - GACC

A member of the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), Mrs Beauty Emefa Narteh, has stated that fighting corruption is a collective effort and that no single individual can fight the canker and win.

She said it was therefore gratifying to see commitment from all relevant stakeholders to get involved and do away with it as it was destroying the country’s reputation as a well-respected country.

She made the remarks at the end of a fifth quarter project review meeting with police officers from Akuapem North, Yilo Krobo, Asuogyaman, North Tongu and Ho West at Kpong.

The programme, which was organised by Socioserve-Ghana, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), was on the theme: “Together Against Corruption,” and sponsored by Star Ghana Foundation, with other funders as Ukaid, European Union and DANIDA.

Project goals

The project, according to Socioserve-Ghana, is not to name and shame any individual or institutions, but rather, engagements to encourage all to work together as citizens and institutions to eliminate acts of corruption in the country.

The project is also to build citizen’s capacity to fight corruption in the citizen’s engagement with the police.

Additionally, it is aimed at increasing the responsiveness of the police administration to cases of corruption involving the police and citizens.

Mrs Narteh called on the Police Service, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) among other authorities, to spearhead the campaign for its success.

She stressed the need for continuous awareness creation against payment of bribes to the police as well as enforcement of the law against people who paid and received bribes to serve as deterrent to others.

She said it was important to provide adequate logistics to the police to enable them to discharge their official duties well.

The Yilo Krobo Municipal Director for the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ms Cynthia Mamle Tetteh, appealed to drivers to always do what was right by acquiring the needed documents to prevent the police from extorting money from them on the roads.

She also urged the government to provide the necessary and adequate resources for the police service and other mandated institutions to work effectively to reduce corruption.

The Programme Manager for Socioserve-Ghana, Mrs Rita Ntoso Ofoe, said corruption was affecting every facet of national life and urged all stakeholders to come on board.
