The Electoral Commission is undertaking a special exercise to transfer the votes of prospective candidates who are desirous of contesting the upcoming District Assembly and Unit Committee Elections in electoral areas and units other than where they registered as voters.
In accordance with Regulation 20 (1) (3) (a) of the Public Elections Regulations, 2012 (C.I 75), the exercise is also to enable them to file their nominations and to contest the elections in those electoral areas or units.
According to a statement signed by Mr Amadu Sulley, Deputy Chairman (Operation) of the EC, a prospective candidate who wants to transfer his/her vote for the purpose of contesting the aforementioned elections must do so not later than Monday, October 13, 2014.
It said that all applications for transfer of votes must be made in person to the district Officer of the Commission in the district where the applicant seeks to contest the election.
“Where the application relates to the district assembly election, the applicant should have resided in the district for an aggregate period of not less than 12 months in the four years preceding the election,” the statement added.
The statement further said that where the application was related to the unit committee election, the applicant must have lived in the particular unit where he/she seeks to contest the election for an aggregate period of not less than 12 months in the four years preceding the election.
It reminded the public that a transfer of vote was permanent and that new polling station would become the applicant’s voting piont.
