Don’t politicise national sanitation day — Minister

The Deputy Minister of Local Government, Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, has stressed the need for Ghanaians to not politicise the national sanitation day instituted by the government; rather they should support the programme to rid the country of filth and diseases.

He said the call had become necessary since the national development programme being pursued by the government could only be realised with healthy people.

Mr Agyekum, who is also the Member of Parliament (MP) for Nkoranza North, made the call when he addressed members of staff of the various departments under the Birim Central Municipality at a grand durbar at Akyem yesterday.

He praised the Birim Central Municipal Assembly for being a well-organised institution as it was on top of issues.

The deputy minister called for the sustenance of the positive spirit and urged the stakeholders to sustain it in order to push the municipality forward.

He implored departmental heads to encourage their subordinates to support the national sanitation day activity in their various communities to reduce the government’s expenditure on disease control in order to invest the money in other sectors of the economy.

Mr Agyekum advised Ghanaians to be proactive and strive to help improve living conditions in their communities. He also urged them to add value to their careers in order to remain in business.

Mr Agyekum cautioned the people against indiscriminate littering of waste after consuming food or using other items.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Birim Central, Mr Kwabena Nkansah Asare, said the assembly had passed the Functional Organisational Assessment Tool (FOAT) since its inception and was currently among the best performing districts/municipalities in the country per the last assessment.
