‘Don’t allow partisan politics to take better part of country’

The incumbent District Chief Executive (DCE) for Sekyere South, Mr Edward Kusi Ayarkwa has cautioned Ghanaians to not allow partisan politics to take the better part of the country.

He stressed that almost everything in the country had been politicised and it would be better to refrain from creating such dangerous precedent, otherwise the development of the country would be jeopardised.

Mr Ayarkwa gave the caution after assembly members confirmed his nomination as DCE for Sekyere South.

Mr Ayarkwa polled 45 out of the 48 votes cast, representing 93.7 per cent, in an election supervised by the Deputy Ashanti Regional Electoral Officer, Mr Lawrence Sarpong.

He commended  the members of the assembly for the opportunity to serve the assembly and urged members to continue to support him for the realisation of their objectives.

He said this was essential for accelerating the development of the district.

Mr Ayarkwa added that when he first took office as the DCE, the assembly members put their partisan interest aside and concertedly worked hard to  develop the district.

He, however, expressed regret that getting to the end of his tenure, the partisan considerations  became more pronounced and nearly brought about some disaffection.

Mr Ayarkwa, therefore, pleaded with the members to go back to the drawing board and not to revisit such negative tendencies.

He also urged  the members of the assembly to continue pursuing their development agenda.

The Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Director,Mr Kofi Dwomoh Asubonteng,  who deputised for the Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku, reminded the members about making the election ‘one touch.’

He advised them to always work in unity and that with peaceful co-existence, they could make significant impact in their area's development.

Before his confirmation, the position of the Presiding Member (PM), which had been contested nine times, was filled, when Alhaji Ibrahim Ahmed, the incumbent PM, withdrew for his opponent, Mr Daniel Asenso Agyemang, Assembly Member for Jamasi-Central Electoral Area, to go solo. He got 45 out of the 50 votes, representing 90 per cent.

Speaking to this reporter later, Alhaji Ahmed said he could not allow the stalemate to disturb the work of the assembly, hence his withdrawal.
