CPP calls for comprehensive audit of MMT buses

The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has called for a comprehensive audit of the MMT buses to ascertain their roadworthiness and quality to ensure minimal occurrence of regrettable and avoidable accidents on the roads.

The party also called on the government to, as a matter of urgency, address the shortfall in healthcare delivery and emergency response for them to live up to their mandate whenever it became necessary.

Expressing the party’s condolence over the fatal accident that occurred on the Kintampo-Tamale highway last Wednesday, the National Chairman and Leader of the CPP, Professor Edmund Delle, and the party’s 2016 flag bearer, Mr Ivor Kobina Greenstreet, said it was always a regrettable situation to lose even a single life in road accidents, and to lose over 60 souls made the situation much more painful.

In a statement signed on their behalf by the party’s Communication Director, Mr Kadri Abdul Rauf Issifu, the two stated, “In this moment of difficulty and sorrow, we offer our sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and fervently pray for those who sustained various degrees of injury to fully recover.”

They stated that “as we mourn the dead and pray for the injured, let us not lose sight of the lack of quick emergency response that has often characterised us as a nation when disaster strikes. It is very shocking to note that there was only one single functioning ambulance with the capacity to contain only two patients at a time at the Kintampo Government Hospital”.

According to the two party leaders, this was worrying particularly at a time a recent report indicated that over 40 ambulances out of the 130 purchased in 2010 had been grounded due to lack of maintenance.

They stated that proper procedures required the ambulances to be replaced after five years. “But as usual, leadership of this country appears not to prioritise healthcare delivery by this posture.”

“Clearly, these were situations where we were justified to make good use of sole-sourcing and not the rather shameful way of awarding contracts to government cronies”, the CPP leaders stated.
