‘Civic engagement key to national development’

The Kadjebi District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr Daniel Agbesi Latsu, has called for civic engagement between citizens and public officials in the decision-making process, since such engagements are key to national development.

He said good governance involved making decisions and implementing the decisions in a manner that was participatory, consensus-oriented, accountable, transparent, effective and efficient, equitable, inclusive and guided by the rule of law.

Mr Latsu was speaking at a forum at Olombobi in the Kadjebi District to educate the citizenry on the need to be involved in the governance of the country.

Engagement process

He explained that the engagement process should be insulated against partisan bias or political capture to achieve the desired results adding that for strategic plans to properly reflect the needs of the citizens, they must be drawn up in consultation with the key players from identifiable groups and participants given access to needs analysis information.

Mr Latsu also admonished Ghanaians to desist from mob justice since the laws of the land frowned on the act.

Appeal to citizens

An Assistant Civic Education Officer of the NCCE, Mr Gabriel Kwame Dzanka, appealed to the citizenry to contribute to the development of their communities, since the government could not do everything for them.

Mr Dzanka also called on the populace to respect the rights, freedoms and legitimate interests of others and desist from engaging in acts detrimental to the welfare of other persons.

The headman of Olombobi, Mr Aikins Adzimah, thanked the management and staff of the NCCE and called for more of such educative programmes.

Mr Adzimah appealed to the Kadjebi District Assembly and benevolent organisations to help construct a three-unit classroom block with other facilities for the Olombobi Primary School, whose structure was in a deplorable state.

He also called for the extension of electricity to Olombobi, Koru and Amegatse Kofe.

Similar programmes were held at Dodo-Tamale, Dodo-Pepesu, Dzindziso and Ahamansu.
