A broadcast journalist with one of the local radio stations in Kumasi, Ms Bertrin Amponsah Biritwum, better known as BB, has declared her intention to contest the Manhyia North Parliamentary seat on the ticket of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP).

Ms Biritwum last Tuesday returned her forms to the party hierarchy in the region and joined young and ambitious people who have declared their intention to contest the parliamentary election on the ticket of the PPP.

Priorities

The activities she intended to embark on when elected, she said, included the provision of places of convenience for most of the basic schools in the constituency, provision of refuse containers for schools and at vantage points for the people and also liaising with the district assembly and other development partners to tar some of the roads in the constituency.

According to her, although the constituency was close to the second busiest airport in the country, it had some of the most deplorable road networks.

BB said the constituency abounded in lots of human resources that could be harnessed for the development of the area and the region.

She said her intention was to set up a constituency development fund akin to the district assemblies common fund for specific projects in the constituency.

One of her hobbies is experimenting to find new things and also debating and she believes politics is one field where she can easily do both of these.

Political career

Although relatively new in politics, Ms Biritwum said her campaign message and strategy were her trump cards that would deliver her the seat.

She said her campaign would be clean and devoid of any mudslinging and name calling.

She added that it was high time more women got involved in politics and changed the perception that it was a field meant for men.

According to her, most women who have ventured into politics have distinguished themselves well and this is spurring young ladies into the field.

Education

BB, as her peers call her, holds a first degree in Materials Engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) and has worked extensively in the media, both as a reporter and a hostess.

She said being in the media had exposed her to a lot of things particularly the plight of the vulnerable in society.

Even though she acknowledged that some civil society organisations and the government were doing their best to alleviate their plights, she expressed the view that if those efforts were combined and things done in a systematic manner, the results could be much greater than what pertained now.
