Mr Awinador-Kanyirige who is also Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. (UNECA), gave the assurance that he would continue to work to strengthen the existing ties between the two countries.

Relations between Ghana and Ethiopia dates back to the days of Dr Kwame Nkrumah and his Ethiopian counterpart, Emperor Haile Sellassie and their alliance for African liberation and unity.

Ghana is also the first independent African state to have establish a diplomatic mission in Addis Ababa.

At the last AU Summit in July this year, President Akufo-Addo, while expressing gratitude for the AU’s recognition of Ghana’s Kwame Nkrumah, called on the AU to honour Emperor Haile Sellassie and the dynamic former Prime Minister Meles Zenawi for their key roles in African Unity and Development.

The recommendation was endorsed by acclamation. This falls in line with President Akufo-Addo's 60th independence anniversary speech emphasising the need to honour all Ghanaian heroes towards mobilising the youth for the future.
