Assemblies in Accra inaugurated
Inaugural ceremonies were held at various metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs) in Accra last Thursday for elected assembly members, government appointees and unit committee members.
Their role, as provided for under sections 12(1) and 13 of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), is to formulate and execute plans, programmes and strategies for the effective mobilisation of resources for the development of their districts.

Juliet Akyaa Safo reports that 20 elected assembly members and nine government appointees were sworn in by a Justice of the High Court, Justice Afia Serwaa Asare, for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).
A speech read on behalf of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo by the Presidential Advisor on HIV/AIDS, Dr Mokowa Blay Adu-Gyamfi, urged the assembly members to lead the development aspirations of their respective districts.
Prioritise development
The Chief Executive of the AMA, Mr Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah, in his remarks, charged the assembly members to discharge their duties devoid of partisanship and rather focus on prioritising the development agenda in the municipalities.
The Stool Secretary of Ngleshie Alata Traditional Area, Nii Akei Bonso III, who spoke on behalf of the traditional authorities, urged the assembly members to always liaise with the traditional authorities to address the needs of the people.
Korle Klottey
At the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the assembly, Mr Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah, urged them to work towards improving the lives of people while prioritising revenue mobilisation and driving the development agenda of the municipality.
Six appointed members, 11 elected assembly members and 50 unit committee members were sworn in by a Magistrate, Ms Felicia Anane Antwi.
The Member of Parliament for the Korle Klottey Constituency, Dr Zenator Rawlings, who was present at the ceremony, asked the assembly members to fulfill their role and promises to the people.
Rejoice Lavinia Eklu reports that the Ga Central Assembly (GCMA) inducted 16 assembly members, 65 unit committee members and five government appointees to ensure the smooth administration of the local assembly.
They were sworn in by a Kwabenya Circuit Court Judge, Justice Ellen Lordina Serwaa Mireku.
The MCE of the GCMA, Dr Emmanuel Lamptey, congratulated the members and urged them to be dutiful and ensure the good of the local people.
The Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Mr Ignatius Baffour Awuah, urged the inductees to always engage the people and serve them in various capacities.
Other assemblies
The Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Osei Bonsu Amoah, represented the President in at the La Dade-Kotopon, Ledzokuku-Krowor and the Krowo municipal assemblies, Joshua Bediako Koomson reports.
Ten assembly members, five appointees and 50 Unit Committee members were sworn in at the La Dade-Kotopon Municipal Assembly.
The MCE of the area, Mr Solomon Kotey Nokoi, in his address, stated that the public administrative system of the assembly had over the years functioned successfully without any hitch.
He, therefore, urged the members to work assiduously to ensure the continuous development of the municipality.
LEKMA
At the Ledzokuku-Krowor Municipal Assembly, 18 members and 12 unit committee members were sworn in.
The MCE of the municipality, Mrs Evelyn Naa Adjeley Twum-Gyamrah, expressed optimism that the high calibre of elected assembly members would help the assembly witness rapid socio-economic development.
Krowo
At the Krowo Municipal Assembly, 12 assembly members, six government appointees and 60 Unit Committee members were sworn in to steer the affairs of the municipality.
The MCE, Mr Joshua Nii Bortey, in his remarks, thanked stakeholders for their role in ensuring a peaceful election, adding that the inauguration would promote public participation in governance and help in decentralising the administrative and financial machinery of government to the regions and districts.
Weija-Gbawe Municipality
Salifu B. Moro reports that 21 assembly members, made up of 14 elected and seven members appointed by the government, were sworn in by the Circuit Court Judge for the Weija-Gbawe Municipality, Justice Bernard Bentil.
The MCE for the assembly, Mr Patrick Kwesi Brako Kumor, called for the participation of more women in the local governance system in the area, saying: "We only have two women among the 14 elected assembly members”.
