Afigya Kwabre DCE confirmed

The Afigya Kwabre District Assembly has confirmed the incumbent District Chief Executive (DCE), Mr Kaakyire Oppong Kyekyeku, for a second term in office.

The DCE was one of the five municipal and district chief executives renominated by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, June 21, 2013.

At the assembly’s general meeting at Kodie, the district capital, out of a total of 58 assembly members present, 49 representing 84.5 per cent of them voted in favour of the DCE, giving him more than the two-thirds majority vote he needed to be declared confirmed.

A Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), Mr Lawrence Sarpong,  supervised the assembly’s election and affirmed the decision of the assembly.

Before then, the assembly had elected the Assembly Member for Buoho Electoral Area, Mr Osei Yaw Aning, as the Presiding Member after his predecessor, Nana Boakye Yiadom Atonsah, informed the house of his decision not to contest again.

In effect, Mr Aning, who went unopposed, was given a resounding 51 votes, representing, 87.9 per cent while seven, representing 12.1 per cent out of the total of 58 assembly members present, voted against him.

He was sworn in by the Afigya Kwabre District Magistrate, Mr Bright A. Akonde, after the election supervised by the Afigya Kwabre District Officer of the EC, Mr Joshua Ofori Prempeh.

At the end of the elections, both the PM and DCE respectively expressed their gratitude to the assembly members for voting for them and reposing confidence in them.

They called for unity, co-operation and peace to continue to prevail in Afigya Kwabre District.
