MoH procures 5,000 motorbikes for community health nurses

The workshop, being organised by the Nurses and Midwives Council (NMC), aims at equipping the various principals with skills on how to improve academic activities in their institutions.

Since 2007, 2,600 community health nurses are trained every year.

Dr Anamena said the ministry was ready to make more motorbikes available to support the movement of community nurses and ensure the provision of effective and efficient services to the people.

Over the years, he added, community health nurses had operated in the urban centres, to the neglect of rural areas, where their services were most needed.

According to him, the nurses had been given the requisite logistics for their jobs to enable them  to move to the rural areas and provide health support to the people.

The Chief Executive Officer of the NMC, Rev. Veronica Darko, said the curriculum for health training institutions would be reviewed this year and added that the review would enable the NMC to introduce courses that were relevant to modern-day health needs of the people.

The new curriculum, she added, would take cognisance of national issues without ignoring international practices.

Rev. Darko also said  the decision to enforce the policy of sending community health nurses to the local communities would help to address the problem of maternal mortality and other health complications.

That, she indicated, was because the nurses would be in constant touch with the people and could advise pregnant women on what to do to ensure that they were safe before, during and after giving birth.
