The newly qualified doctors swore the Hippocratic Oath (the physician's oath) administered by Dr Eric Asamoa, the Chairman of the GMDC, at a ceremony held at the university campus in Tamale on,  February 7,2014.

They are the first batch of doctors to be trained using the problem-based learning (PBL) approach introduced by the university in 2007.

They are also the third batch of medical doctors trained by the UDS-SMHS to be licensed by the GMDC to operate as qualified medical doctors in the country.

The new doctors will be posted to the Tamale Teaching Hospital ( TTH) and other accredited health facilities in the country where they could be mentored by specialists during their 'housemanship'.

Problem-based approach

The PBL approach ensures that health solutions are tailored in accordance with existing socio-economic challenges. It was introduced by the UDS with the support of the Dutch government to help produce a new crop of medical professionals who will improve medical practice in the country.

Speaking at the induction ceremony, the Pro. Vice -Chancellor  of the UDS, Prof Gabriel Ayum Teye, reminded the new doctors to strive to maintain high standards in their practice, be abreast of the code of ethics and the rules and regulations guiding the profession and any other factors that would enhance and sustain their career.

Prof Teye said the UDS-SMHS was established to serve the northern sector of the country, since most doctors trained in the south found it very difficult to live and work in the north.

He appealed to the doctors to return to serve in the rural and deprived communities in the northern part of the country after their 'housemanship'  to achieve the purpose for which the school was set up.

Dr Joseph Mawunyo Apeadido, on behalf of the new doctors, expressed appreciation to the university, the lecturers, parents and all those who played a part in their training.
