KATH doctors meet management over lack of oxygen and blood

Some doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi have raised issues with the lack of essential supplies including oxygen and blood at the Accident and Emergency Centre which has been hampering the provision of services to patients.

Following this, the management called for a crunch meeting to address the problems at the Accident and Emergency Centre on Wednesday.

The doctors in a statement signed by their chairman, Dr Michael Leat complained of the lack of sustainable oxygen, the re-emergence of the "cash and carry"and the upfront payment for essential drugs and services such as blood transfusions.

These factors they said have affected the effective delivery of health services at the hospital and also threatened to lay down their tools if the authorities do not address their concerns.

The statement which triggered Wednesday's meeting added that the doctors were 'sick and tired of presiding over death pyres and being instruments of hades as opposed to the life bringers as descendants of asciepius. '

Prior to the crunch meeting, both the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital Dr Joseph Akpaloo and Dr Leat refused to speak to Graphic Online, saying their comments could prejudice the outcome of the meeting.'

Recently, the KATH has been running a series of advertisements in the Daily Graphic inviting quotations for the purchase of some essential equipment including the oxygen plant to fix the problem.

Last year, the oxygen problem as well as an outdated lift became very prominent in the media to the extent one used oxygen plant from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra was brought to serve as a stopgap measure.

Months later, the lift was also repaired, easing pressure on patients who had to trek upstairs for treatment.
