Health Ministry to recruit 5,000 more nurses : Before close of year

The Ministry of Health (MoH) is to recruit 5,000 more nurses across the country before the close of this year. So far, more than 7,000 nurses have been engaged since the beginning of the year.

The Director of Human Resource at the MoH, Mr Lawoetey Tetteh, who disclosed this in Tamale, said the rationale was to improve healthcare delivery services in the country.

He was speaking at the presentation and dissemination of the revised Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) policy in Tamale in the Northern Region yesterday.

Recruitment

Reacting to a question raised about the employment of health workers, as the government sought to expand the CHPS compounds, Mr Tetteh indicated that the MoH was currently waiting for financial clearance from the Ministry of Finance for the recruitment exercise to take off.

The dissemination forum, which brought stakeholders together, was on the theme: “Accelerating attainment of universal health coverage and bridging the access in equity gap”.

The revised CHPS policy seeks to improve healthcare delivery at the community level.

The CHPS concept was introduced in the country in 1994 as a way of administering quality healthcare services at the community level.

Currently, there are over 4,000 CHPS compounds across the country and it is expected that by 2020 the number will be increased to over 10,000.

Maternal deaths

The Northern Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Jacob Mahama, said the region had, in the first half of this year, recorded 72 cases of maternal deaths.

He said although the figure was lower than the 94 that was registered in 2015, the trend was still unacceptable.

He attributed some of the deaths to delays in sending labour cases to health facilities.

Dr Mahama also expressed concern that most of the expectant mothers did not go for antenatal care services.

He, therefore, advised expectant mothers to visit health facilities early for the sake of their life and that of the unborn child.
