Teenage girls at the Nneka Youth Foundation Summer camp have been educated on the dangers of using detergents, bleach and soap to wash their private parts.
A lecturer at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), Madam Forgive Norvivor, advised girls to desist from such practices because it could have serious effects on their health.
According to her, girls should wash their private part with water and never insert any chemical in their vagina to freshen up, especially during menstruation.
Madam Norvivor noted that some teenagers under the influence of peers used various chemicals they found on the streets so as to prevent bad odour emanating from their private parts and pointed out that, girls who do that could damage their reproductive organs.
She advised teenagers who have problems with bad odour to seek medical advice instead of self-medicating adding that ‘if you practise this bad behaviour you would harm yourself and that would create problems for you in the future’.
Madam Norvivor advised boys also to avoid masturbation which she described as a very bad practice.
A teacher from the Likpe Nkwanta M.A. JHS explained to the participants the importance and dangers of social media and advised them to use it for research purposes and networking.
The Founder of the foundation, Mrs Cecilia Fiaka, said the annual youth camp in the region was growing bigger and thus proposed the construction of a pavilion at Ve Agbome to accommodate participants in subsequent years.
According to her, the foundation was focused on grooming future leaders. It is also aimed at encouraging the youth in the districts to desist from activities that could lead to teenage pregnancy, drug abuse, truancy, among others, so as to achieve their goals in life.
She thanked all sponsors, especially Junior Graphic, for making the event a success.
An inter-district quiz competition which was based on questions from the Junior Graphic was won by the Hohoe District.
This year’s youth camp brought together about 2,250 junior high school students from five districts, namely Afadjato-South, Kpando, Hohoe, North Dayi and South Dayi.
