Breast Care International holds free screening for hairdressers

BREAST CARE International (BCI), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) committed to breast cancer sensitisation programmes, has held a free breast screening exercise for members of the Ghana Hairdressers & Beauticians Association (GHABA).

Held at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, on Wednesday, October 12, 2022, the gesture was to commemorate the association’s 50th-anniversary celebration.

The initiative formed part of efforts to raise awareness of breast cancer among women in Ghana.

About 800 women were also taught how to perform self-examination of the breast, one of the key elements in the early detection of breast cancer and other breast-related diseases.

The President of BCI, Dr Mrs Beatrice Wiafe-Addai, in a short remark, emphasized that screening was very important as it led to early detection and treatment, which resulted in more lives being saved.

She said global efforts to control the disease had focused on early detection and prompt action, with evidence indicating that diagnosing breast cancer at an early stage could save both the woman’s breast and her life.

She, therefore, advised women to seek early treatment and also take proper care of themselves.

50th anniversary

The President of GHABA, Madam Tina Offei Yirenkyi, spoke on the anniversary’s theme: “Accelerating the Adoption of Digital Solution in the Hair and Beauty Industry: the Role of GHABA”.

She said the time was apt for actors in the beauty industry to take advantage of digital solutions to manage and promote businesses to remain competitive in this technological era.

“One of the key interventions was the national registration of our members to be able to compile a credible database”, she hinted, adding that members would soon be issued with electronic identification cards.
