Bad roads affect health care in Ahafo Ano South

THE poor state of roads in the Ahafo Ano South District is affecting the delivery of quality health care. Apart from the difficulty health personnel suffer before reaching communities to render services, patients also go through similar challenges before reaching health facilities.

It also results in frequent breakdown of vehicles and motorbikes of health personnel as they embark on outreaches to render health care services to the people in the various communities especially the hinterlands.

Health review meeting

The Ahafo Ano South District Director of Health Services, Mr Reuben Bedzrah, expressed concern  about the situation at the half-year health review meeting organised by the Ahafo Ano South District Health Management Team at Mankranso last Friday.

The meeting brought together health personnel, traditional authorities, non-governmental organisations, heads of departments and other people to review the state of health issues in the district within the first half of the year.

Mr Bedzrah, appealed to the government to improve the condition of roads in the districts.

High fares

Other participants at the review meeting lamented the high cost of transportation in most of the hard-to-reach communities, as the few drivers who decide to operate on those roads charge exorbitant fares.

School children

It also came to light that because drivers refuse to ply the roads, schoolchildren in the area have to walk long distances from their communities to school since they do not have access to vehicles.

That makes them very tired before they reach their various schools, thus affecting their learning.

The District Chief Executive for Ahafo Ano South, Mr Gabriel Barima, in an address read for him by the District Planning Officer, Mr Akowuah Ababio, assured the health management team that those roads would soon be fixed.

He explained that the assembly had fixed its grader to start reshaping some roads which had become impassable due to heavy rains and other activities, and added that further plans were being made to award them on contract.

The DCE gave an assurance that the assembly would continue to support the operations and activities of the district health management team to improve quality health care delivery for the people.
