Asanko Mines, health directorate to build database of women with breast cancer

The Amansie West District Health Directorate of the Ashanti region is collaborating with Asanko Mines to develop a baseline of building statistics of women with breast cancer in the area to track the trajectory and provide a solution.

Currently, the district lacks statistics on the disease because those who appear to have developed it, prefer to travel to major hospitals in Kumasi because of the non-existence of referral hospitals at Amansie.

The District Director of Health, Pharm Bernard Bedu Bediako, told the Daily Graphic at Manso Abore within the district that beyond building the database, the two are building the capacities of women in the catchment area for early detection and treatment.

"Early detection is the cornerstone of dealing with this kind of disease, and the collaboration which started last year is paying off," he said.

Pharm Bediako was contributing towards this year's breast cancer month at Manso Abore by the Asanko chapter of Women in Mining in collaboration with Asanko Medical Services, Amansie West and South Health Directorates.

It is themed; "Give hope", stressing how women can cope with their lives even after the Mines.

Erroneous impression

Pharm Bediako said the education has helped to demystify the notion that breast cancer was caused by witches.

Trainer of trainers

The Organiser of the Asanko chapter of Women in Mining, Gloria Bentil Mensah, a number of trainer of trainers programmes have been rolled out hoping that it will be sustained to save the lives of the women in the catchment area.

At the heart of the campaign is the targeting Senior High Schools and churches.

A number of group leaders and coordinators in the churches and schools are intensifying the campaign and taking the bio-data of all females for follow-ups.

Among them are one Akua Pomaa, a church leader of the Manso Nkran Baptist Church and Joyce Nkansah of the Esaase Bontifufuo SHS, the Girls' Co-ordinator.

Doctor

The Acting Unit Manager, Asanko Medical Services, Dr Henry Adjei-Mensah, took staff mainly women into the basics of how to do self-examination.

He encouraged them not to be shy but report any detection early enough for action.
