Ghana to host Africa Virtual Asset Summit 2026

The summit, convened by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ghana, will take place at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra under the theme , “Tokenisation: Africa’s Pathway Towards Building a Trusted, Inclusive and Innovative Virtual Asset Ecosystem.”

A major focus of the event will be the proposed Accra Declaration, a set of shared principles and recommendations aimed at guiding the responsible development of virtual assets and tokenisation across the continent.

Tokenisation involves the digital representation of assets and could create new opportunities to unlock value in areas such as gold, real estate, cocoa, bonds and trade receivables. It also has the potential to broaden investment opportunities and improve how assets are owned, transferred and traded.

Ghana is already exploring some of these possibilities through its regulatory sandbox, including applications involving gold and Treasury bills.

AVAS 2026 seeks to translate discussions about tokenisation into practical outcomes, including policy recommendations, stronger engagement between regulators and market participants, and cross-border partnerships to promote responsible innovation.

The summit is expected to attract representatives from securities regulatory bodies, central banks, finance ministries, financial intelligence units, stock exchanges, banks, asset management firms, pension funds, insurance companies, virtual asset service providers, fintech companies, investment firms, the legal profession, academia and development organisations.

Announced keynote speakers include the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Baah Forson; Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama; Director-General of the SEC, Dr James Klutse Avedzi; Chief of Staff Julius Debrah; and Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations Samuel Nartey George.

The proposed Accra Declaration is expected to provide a framework for cooperation among African jurisdictions, promote responsible tokenisation practices and support the development of credible virtual asset markets.

As African economies explore innovative ways to mobilise capital and expand financial inclusion, the summit will provide a platform for stakeholders to discuss the policies, partnerships and regulatory approaches needed to realise the potential of tokenisation.
