Youth of Kojo Ashong cautioned against unlawful acts

The Ga West Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Sam Atukwei Quaye, has cautioned the youth of Kojo Ashong near Amasaman to stop engaging in unlawful acts in the community.

According to him, the youth allegedly extorted money from some motorists and allowed them to use a route at Kojo Ashong to Nsawam, which had weakened a bridge in the area.

He said the youth extorted money from drivers of trucks used by sand winners in the Nsawam area and allowed them to travel through Kojo Ashong instead of the drivers using the road from Sakyikrom near Nsawam because the former was shorter and also the drivers wanted to avoid arrest.

Sensitisation durbar

Mr Quaye was speaking at a sensitisation durbar held recently for the residents of Oboum and Kojo Ashong.

The durbar was organised to find a lasting solution to some unlawful practices by some youth in the area.

Mr Quaye said the bridge was the main link between two communities, Oboum and Kojo Ashong in the municipality, and Amasaman, hence the need to protect it.

“If we allow the bridge to be destroyed, the communities might be cut off from the municipality, since the bridge is the only route to Amasaman, and it will be difficult to reach them on time when there's an emergency,” he said.

He, therefore, cautioned the youth to desist from the act.

Background

The bridge was constructed to provide a shorter route through Oboum and Kojo Ashong to Amasaman and was to be used by saloon cars only.

However, some youth in Kojo Ashong often position themselves in the vicinity of the bridge and extort money from heavy-duty truck drivers, after which they allow them to use the bridge.

All attempts made by the chiefs and the assembly member of the area to stop the youth have proved futile.
