Work starts on Teshie Demo culvert

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ledzokuku Municipal Assembly (LEKMA), Mrs Evelyn Naa Adjeley Twum-Gyamrah, has cut the sod for the construction of a culvert at Teshie Demo, near Accra.

The project, which is being funded from the District Development Fund and awarded to Messrs Salifu A. Abu Company Limited, is expected to be completed within three months.

The construction of the entire Demo road, the MCE said, had been captured as part of the government’s Syno Hydro Project, and that the assembly would see to the reshaping of the road until the project started.

That, she explained, was to maintain the quality of the road.

Importance

Underlining the importance of the project, the MCE said it would open access to Demo, a heavily populated residential area in Teshie, to the main Accra-Tema beach road.

The culvert is an important infrastructure that carries large volumes of water, especially flood water, from the north-eastern parts of Accra.

Mrs Twum-Gyamrah also explained that the project formed part of the assembly’s responsibility to provide infrastructure to the area, adding that when completed it would go a long way to improve the social service delivery in the area and the municipality at large.

She indicated that alternative routes had been created to ensure that the project did not create problems with movements that could disadvantage the people.

She appealed to residents in the area to cooperate with and give every support needed to the contractor for the speedy completion of the project.

Antecedent

In June 2018, a medical doctor at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Aya Hayfron, lost her life when she attempted driving over the Teshie Demo Bridge during a downpour in some parts of Accra.

The bridge, which could not hold the volumes of flood water due to its small size, had become difficult to drive over.

Touching on challenges facing the municipality, Mrs Twum-Gyamrah said she was aware of them and assured the residents that she was doing everything possible to address them one at a time due to resource constraints.

The Project Director of Messrs Salifu A. Abu Company Limited, Mr Sultan Salifu, assured the assembly and the community of quality work, and added that the company would complete the work on schedule.
