Work resumes on Nima drain
Work has resumed on the construction of the 1.2 kilometre Nima drain in Accra after about three years of suspension.

President John Dramani Mahama performed the ceremonial sod cutting yesterday for work to resume as he kicked off his two-day 'Changing lives, transforming Ghana' tour of the Greater Accra Region.
Residents of Nima and Maamobi, where the drain, popularly known as "Alhamdu gutter" traverses, had persistently voiced their frustration over the delay of the project as it compounded the sanitation problem of the highly populated Muslim communities.
During heavy rainfall, the drain spills over, destroys property and puts lives in danger.
Importance
Emphasising the importance of the project, the President said it would relieve the people of the trouble they went through during such downpours.
He said over the years, the residents of Nima and Maamobi had been accused of dumping refuse in the drains.
That, he explained, was because there were no access roads for refuse trucks to get to the houses.
With the resumption of the project, the President said access roads would be constructed to address the problem.
He expressed the hope that the contractor would live up to expectation.
President Mahama, who was accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs Lordina Mahama, assured the people of the area that they would continue to have their share of national development.
Muslim Chiefs
Speaking on behalf of the Council of Muslim chiefs, Alhaji Baba Issah, a member of the council, said the drainage project was so dear to the chiefs and people.
"It will save lives and improve sanitation," he said.
