Four months after the sod has been cut for the construction of a press resource centre for the Ashanti Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Kumasi, work on the project has been progressing steadily.

The two-storey project, situated in the serene suburb of Danyame, is being financed by the government at a cost of GH¢583,229.08.

It is expected to be completed by the end of January 2014.

On completion, it will have facilities including a reception, a computer room, two syndicated rooms, five administrative offices and a 200-capacity conference room.

Among other things, it will provide an appropriate convergence point for information gathering by journalists in the region, as well as those from other regions.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku, facilitated the process leading to the financing of the project by the government.

When Mr Opoku assumed office as regional minister, the regional executives of the GJA approached him about an earlier promise by past regional ministers to provide a befitting press centre for the regional branch.

Determined not to let the project stay on the drawing board, Mr Opoku approached President John Dramani Mahama who readily approved the financing of the project by the government.

Four months after the sod-cutting, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GJA, Mr Listowell Yesu Bukarson, said he was impressed by the speed of work and commended the government for the support.
