In spite of their achievements, he said the engineers community could not afford to rest on their laurels but work harder to promote sound infrastructural development.

He made the appeal in Accra at the 2015 Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) last Saturday, during which individuals and organisations, including engineers and non-engineers, who had contributed to promote engineering excellence and innovations for public benefit and national development were rewarded. The event was on the theme, “Engineers, Rise Up and Reconstruct the Nation.”

He stressed that the nation’s efforts to attain a sustainable and resilient environment would depend on the quality of architectural works of engineers.

He also pointed out the need for the engineers to collectively work towards increasing awareness, understanding and recognition of the profesion to the public.

For his part, the immediate past president of GhIE, Ing Magnus Lincoln Quashie, urged engineers to emulate the success of their predecessors who contributed to designing and laying the foundation of the country’s infrastructure, to enrich their knowledge.

The guest speaker and Chief Executive Officer of the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), Ing Owusu K. Sarfo, called on engineers to team up with the government in its effort to address challenges in the energy sector, adding that engineers were the fulcrum of all the sectors in the country’s economy, hence, “they should rise and build the nation”.

Awards

The awards were categorised into: research, student, young engineers, and public, as well as projects (including engineering design, engineering business management and implementation solution).

For the students category, the awardees were a student of Manhean Seventh Day Adventist Basic School (MASDA) at Tema New Town in the Greater Accra Region, Master Felix Jasmine (second cycle school), and a graduate in BSc Geological Engineering degree from the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Mr Kwasi Boadu Ntiamoah (tertiary).

Jasmine initiated a project “generating power supply for MASDA using brine with carbon and zinc plates” to minimise the impact of “dumsor” that affected their learning at night.

The public award was given to the Director of Work at the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing, Ing John Ahene Tettey, for the enlightenment and promotion he had provided the public about the profession while the Chairman of ADK Consortium in Ghana, Ing Michael Krakue, was rewarded for exhibiting excellence in leadership achievement, planning and organisational competence.

The  Chief Executive of the Volta River Authority (VRA), Ing Isaac Kirk Koffi, was honoured in the engineering business management category, while Ing Peter Gyane Gyima won the implementation of engineering solution for designing and implementing the System Alarms and Measurands Publisher (SAMP).
