Worawora festival unrest: Four remanded over chieftaincy dispute

The Dambai Circuit Court has remanded four persons in police custody in connection with disturbances at Dwabrem, Worawora, in the Oti Region, the Ghana Police Service has said.

The accused persons, Kwame Aboagye Ahenkroa, 55, Prince Asante, 27, Daniel Wiafe, 20, and Kwabena Nsimbo, 22, were remanded on October 27, 2026. They are expected to reappear before the court on November 17, 2026.

The Oti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has directed the families involved in the dispute to seek redress through the appropriate courts and Houses of Chiefs, according to the Police.

In a statement issued on October 28, 2026, and signed by the Oti Regional Public Affairs Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Nchor, the Police said the disturbances occurred on October 24, 2026, and involved the burning of vehicle tyres and other acts of violence.

The incident occurred amid tensions over the commencement of rites for the Akwantutenten Festival, reportedly following claims that a High Court injunction had been obtained to restrain the celebration.

According to the statement, police personnel deployed to the scene extinguished the fire and restored order.

The Police said REGSEC issued the directive at a meeting with representatives of the disputing families on October 26, 2026. The Council called for the chieftaincy dispute to be resolved through lawful means and directed that all persons arrested in connection with the disturbances be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The Oti Regional Police Command urged all parties to remain calm, exercise restraint and respect lawful processes to maintain peace and security in Worawora.
