Woman seen in viral video lynching 90-year-old woman arrested

One of the main suspects said to have spearheaded the lynching of the 90-year-old woman at Kafaba in the East Gonja Municipality in the Savannah Region last week on the accusation that she was a witch has been arrested.

The suspect Latifah Bumaye, 33, was arrested at Kejewu Bator, a fishing community near Salaga, the capital of the East Gonja Municipality.

Latifah, according to the police is one of the women seen in the viral lynching video, chanting and cheering herself and onlookers and whipping the late Akua Denteh.

This brings the total number of persons arrested and in police custody to six following the murder of Madam Akua Denteh, on July 23, 2020 after a traditional priestess declared her a witch.

The five persons earlier arrested are said to be among those who invited the traditional priestess to the Kafaba community to identify witches and perform the rites of exorcism.

The five who were transferred to the Savannah Regional Police Headquarters were put before the Magistrate Court in Bole and have been remanded to reappear on August 20, 2020.

The chief of Kabafa, Seidu Yahaya was the first to be arrested in connection with the murder of Madam Akua Denteh to assist the police in its investigations but has since been granted bail.

The Savannah Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Enoch Adutwum Bediako, who confirmed the arrest to Graphic Online said Latifah was arrested at her hide out at about 9.30pm on Thursday, July 30, 2020 following intelligence.

He said the suspect has been identified as the one who was torturing the deceased in the viral video which led to her death.
