The young woman, Zelia Sulemana, stabbed one Rawdia Aminu, a nursing student, in her chest and abdomen at Lamashegu in Tamale on April 11, 2014, leading to her death.

Zelia committed the crime during an argument between her and Aminu over Alhassan Abdul-Rahman, her boyfriend, who was an ex-lover of the Aminu.

Prosecuting, a principal state attorney, Mr Salia Qudus, said the convict had earlier  made friends with Aminu and taken her home to introduce her (Aminu) to her parents as her friend.

That was after the convict had deceived Aminu that she was interested in attending the nursing institution where the victim was a student.

Stabbing

On the day of the incident, the convict called Aminu and told her that she wanted to discuss an issue with her outside her house.

Aminu was said to have responded to the invitation, only for Zelia to question the victim about Abdul-Rahman who had become her boyfriend after breaking up with her (Aminu).

The conversation generated into an argument as Aminu had no idea that the convict was in a relationship with her ex-lover.

Overpowered by her emotions, Zelia stabbed Aminu in her chest and abdomen, leading to her death.

Jury

After considering the case, the jury unanimously pronounced Zelia guilty of murder.

However, the presiding judge, Mr Justice Charles Danquah, ordered that a pregnancy test  be conducted on the convict to ascertain whether she was pregnant, as the offence carried capital punishment.

But the pregnancy test showed that she was not pregnant, where, upon trial, the judge sentenced the convict to death by hanging.
