The Western Regional Queenmothers Association (WRQMA) has embarked on a campaign to mobilise an amount of GH¢2,000,000 to acquire a mobile digital mammography unit (MDMU) to screen women, especially those in the remotest parts of the region, for breast cancer.

This forms part of a year-long agenda by the association to support the fight against breast cancer and ensure that most women were frequently screened to avoid the devastating effects of the disease.

The queenmothers are also hoping to set up a breast cancer treatment fund to help breast cancer patients from poor economic backgrounds to access the best quality health care.

The account number for the said fund is 00520035101503, United Bank of Africa (UBA).

Money collection boxes would also be placed at vantage points for members of the general public to deposit any amount of money they wish to donate.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the association, Nana Akosoa Gyamfiaba II, said the purpose of the breast cancer campaign was to ensure that all the women in the region gained enough education that would encourage them to regularly go for breast screening.

Thematic areas of the campaign

She said the thematic areas of the campaign included early detection, as well as prevention of the disease to ensure that women lived healthier lives.

“It is our aim to acquire the MDMU by the end of the year so that we can roll out the screening campaign throughout the region,” she said.

She called on members of the general public, corporate bodies, civil society organisations and religious bodies to donate to the campaign in order to acquire the equipment on time.

She categorically called on men to join the campaign, adding, “This is not just to save your mother or sister’s life, but yours as well,’’ explaining that studies have indicated that, one in 10 men suffer from the disease.
