The group further says it will continue to fight for the welfare of its members with respect to salary and allowances through dialogue and all other means necessary.

This was contained in a communique jointly signed by the National President and National Secretary, Dr. Samuel O. Bekoe and Dr Samuel A. Atintono following government’s plans to replace the book allowances enjoyed by lectures.

Government in August this year said the payment of research allowances to lecturers would no longer be automatic; instead, it would replace the allowance with a National Research Fund to be administered by a board of trustees who will review the application for allowances for research.

The communique, issued at UTAG’s Biennial National Delegates Congress at the University of Education, Winneba, noted that members of the association had pledged to work to enhance the visibility of the group by contributing towards national development.

It said this would be done by identifying experts in the various disciplines among its members in the academia to contribute to national issues through the media.

It also said UTAG would undertake skills audit to identify the various skills and expertise of members that will lead to the creation of the right synergies for research and policy analysis in the country.

“UTAG will in the near future organise a conference to serve as a platform for its members with various skills and expertise to present papers on cutting-edge research that will contribute towards national development and also hold discussions on policy alternatives for national development,” the communique stated.

Meanwhile, UTAG says it will continue to work hard and be committed to maintaining a united front to promote the principle of common action among its members.
