Wanted: Osei Bonsu identified as trotro driver who knocked and killed policeman

The commercial minibus driver [trotro] said to have killed a policeman by running his vehicle over him near the Trinity Theological Seminary in Accra last Friday in an attempt to escape arrest over an alleged traffic offence has been identified as Osei Bonsu.

He has since been declared wanted by the police.

The conductor of the bus [mate], Emmanuel Agyekum who was arrested last Friday evening (February 28, 2020), has since been granted a police enquiry bail.

Agyekum, a resident of Madina Zongo in Accra was handed over to the police at East Legon on Friday evening.

Information gathered by Graphic Online indicates that, Agyekum told the police that after the incident, the driver [Osei Bonsu] asked him to run so he also complied and took to his heels.

He said someone saw him running barefooted and accosted him to find out what had happened.

He told the police that, when he informed the person what had happened, the person took him to the East Legon Police station.

The owner of the vehicle, a Ford Transit bus, according to the police also showed up at the police station last Friday and has been asked to provide the documents covering the vehicle by Monday, March 2, 2020.

The owner has also been asked to provide the driver, Osei Bonsu within one week or would be sent to court as an accomplice.

What happened?

Last Friday, around 10 am the bus driver, Osei Bonsu, and his conductor [mate] were said to be soliciting for passengers at an unauthorised area around the Madina Zongo junction.

In an attempt to avoid arrest, he allegedly fled the scene with the vehicle when he was approached by the police.

Two policemen from Madina Unit of the Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD), Sergeant Moses Appiah and a colleague, Corporal Joshua Azure pursued the driver of the Ford vehicle from the main Legon-Madina road and eventually caught up with him on the Trinity Theological Seminary route.

The two policemen got out of their vehicle and tried to stop the driver from moving his vehicle further according to some eyewitnesses, but the driver in an attempt to drive away, hit Sergeant Moses Appiah and as he tried to drive away, dragged the knocked down Sergeant Appiah under the vehicle.

Sergeant Appiah was dragged for 54.50 metres under the Ford bus when the police later took measurements at the scene of the incident.

The badly injured Sergeant Appiah was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital for emergency treatment but he was pronounced dead later.

Following that the body was taken to the Police Hospital Mortuary.
