Some irate students of the Walewale Senior High School in the Northern Region on Monday set ablaze portions of their headmaster's bungalow and vandalised the school’s computer laboratory.

The students also hurled stones at policemen who went to the compound to quell the rioting, injuring two of them in the process.

The injured were identified as Lance Corporal Seidu Bonni and Lance Corporal Francis Gaisah.

The angry students also smashed the windscreen of a Toyota Land Cruiser, with registration number GP 3018, and a private car belonging to one of the policemen, both of which were parked at the Walewale Police Station.

Twenty-four students were arrested in connection with the rioting.

The Daily Graphic gathered that some of the students were not happy with the way the computerised schools placement exercise had been conducted.

They argued that the exercise had largely favoured students who were not from the area, to the disadvantage of those within Walewale, hence their frustration.

Briefing the Daily Graphic on the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Northern Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, explained that the students initially directed their anger at the headmaster and other members of staff of the school who had currently sought refuge at the chief's palace.

According to Mr Tetteh, the students later attacked a team of policemen and subsequently the police station when they got to know that two of their mates had been arrested by the police for rioting.

He said on Sunday, some of the students allegedly switched off all the lights in the school under the pretext of demonstrating against the school authorities.

Mr Tetteh indicated that the culprits, who were currently in police custody, would be charged for rioting and causing damage.

He said police reinforcement from Bolgatanga and Tamale was on the ground and taken charge of the situation.
