Wa to get three more traffic lights

The Upper West Regional capital, Wa, will soon have three more traffic lights in a move to properly manage the increasing traffic on roads in the municipality.

Wa Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Nuhu Putiaha, said a study had been carried out and recommendations for rectifying the traffic situation in the municipality were being implemented.

Wa has only one traffic light which is situated at the major intersection on the dual carriageway in the town, also called the  JJ Rawlings High Street.

According to Mr Putiaha, population growth and increase in road traffic had occasioned the need to provide more traffic lights at certain points in the town to deal with the increasing cases of road accidents.

"We don't only need order on our roads, we also have to safeguard the lives of motorists and pedestrians and all other road users by providing the necessary facilities on the roads," he said while briefing journalists in Wa.

Road fatalities

Available records at the Upper West Regional Command of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Police Service indicate that 45 persons died from motor accidents in the region in 2014, while 68 died under similar circumstances in 2013.

According to the Municipal Commander of the MTTD, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Joseph Oppong, there were 39 fatal road accidents in the region in 2014 compared to 61 cases recorded in 2013.

Considering that most roads in the region are yet to be paved or tarred coupled with the low concentration of vehicles in the entire region, it is not surprising that the region boasts of just one traffic light which is understandably situated  in the centre of  Wa which is now growing at a fast pace.
