Volta Region Malaria Control Programme launched

This year's Volta Regional National Malaria Control Programme (NAMCOP) has been launched at Amedikpi in the Kpetoe Ziope District in the Volta Region.

The NAMCOP, which is an exercise aimed at reducing the spread of mosquitoes and other mosquito-related diseases, was organised by the Environmental Department of the Kpetoe Ziope District Assembly in collaboration with  Zoomlion Ghana Ltd.

It involved the clearing of weeds, clearing of choked gutters and spraying to fumigate mosquito breeding sites .In addition, they sensitised the people in the area to the harmful effects of poor hygiene and insanitary practices.

Launching the programme, the Kpetoe Ziope District Chief Executive, Mr Michael Adjaho, noted that the exercise was very important since malaria had a negative effect on the socio-economic development of the area and the nation as a whole.

"When a person gets sick of malaria, he or she cannot work, cannot contribute anything to his or her family and workplace", Mr Adjaho noted. He was grateful for the assistance of Zoomlion Ghana Ltd since their activities in the area was contributing greatly to the reduction of malaria cases in the area.

Mr Adjaho called on the people not to leave the job to Zoomlion alone but ensure that their surroundings were always clean.

The Head of the Environmental Sanitation of Zoomlion, Mr Richard Attipoe, said they chose Amedikpi because of the endemic cases of malaria and added that it was due to the overgrown weeds and the water bodies and urged the people to clear the place regularly.

The Kpetoe Ziope District Health Officer, Mr David Gakpeto, said his staff engaged in house-to-house campaigns to sensitise the people to keep their environment clean to prevent the spread of the disease.
