Verdict will be victory for all — Gedel

Sheikh Mahmoud M. GedelA renowned Muslim cleric, Sheikh Mahmoud M. Gedel, says the Supreme Court verdict on the election petition scheduled to be delivered on Wednesday, August 29, 2013, will be a victory for all Ghanaians.
“The verdict cannot be a victory for any political party or for any section or group of the people in Ghana. I anticipate the verdict to be a celebration of the independence of our Judiciary, which is proving to be a working institution,” he said.

Sharing some thoughts with the Daily Graphic on the election petition and its aftermath, Sheikh Gedel said the election petition case was an experience that should move the nation forward in its democratic development.

He said Ghanaians should be proud about the maturity they had demonstrated in the course of the election petition.

“Ghanaians should celebrate the verdict of the election petition, whichever way it goes, as a victory for Ghana, a victory for democracy, a victory for peace, a victory for Africa and, indeed, a practical expression of a people and a nation emerging triumphant and united in the face of a historical socio-political lacunae,” he said.

Sheikh Gedel, who is also a member of the National Peace Council (NPC), urged Ghanaians to celebrate the verdict in the spirit of gratitude to God Almighty who was the nation’s Guide and Protector, adding, “We are all winners.”

He commended the national security agencies for their “timely route march which demonstrated their preparedness to defend the peace, security and stability of our dear nation Ghana”.

“That was, in fact, a positive display of the culture of responsibility and a deterrent to elements who may contemplate toying with the peace and security of the people of Ghana during our present moment of great anxiety,” he said.
