The school, which hitherto admitted about 600 students, now has 3,000 students hence the construction of the new classroom block to accommodate the growing student population.

Inuagurating the block, the Vice- President gave the assurance that the government will continue to make the provision of infrastructure the bedrock of quality education in Ghana.

Mr Amissah-Arthur reiterated the government’s commitment to ensure that non-first-class schools were given the needed infrastructure to compete favourably with well-endowed schools in the country.

“We will do our part as a government to lift underprivileged schools to a level where they can compete favourably with endowed schools in our country,” he said.

Challenges

The Headmaster of the school, Mr K.A. Sarkodieh, enumerated the challenges facing the school, which had not witnessed any major renovation since its establishment.

He said the school’s assembly hall, which served as a multi-purpose hall for all official school gatherings,  was in a deplorable condition and was inadequate for the current student population. Mr Sarkodieh asked for a bigger bus for the school as the current one was not in good condition.

According to him,  leakages in the roofs of classrooms, the dining hall and some staff bungalows due to non-replacement of the roofing sheets in the last 50 years, were other challenges confronting the school.

“We are, therefore, appealing to the government to come to our aid to ameliorate these challenges in order to enhance academic work in line with the government’s policy of providing quality education for the Ghanaian child,” Mr Sarkodieh urged.

Inspection

The Vice-President, as part of his working visit to the Obuasi Municipality also inspected a completed 300-bed dormitory for students of the Christ the King Catholic School and ongoing works on a multi-purpose hall to serve as a dining and an assembly hall for the school.

With 75 per cent of the work completed, the contractor, Mr Dagati Kofi Adams, assured Mr Amissah-Arthur that the project would be completed by December this year.
