Ursula meets Russian officials in Moscow over Ghana's candidacy at WIPO

The Minister of Communications, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has reiterated the importance of knowledge sharing in the Intellectual Property space.

She said this at two separate meetings with top Russian government officials to whip up support for Ghana’s candidate for the upcoming World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) elections.

She led President Akufo-Addo’s Special Envoy to discuss the candidacy of Ghana’s Dr Edward Kwakwa for the position of Director-General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

WIPO is one of the 15 specialised agencies of the United Nations created in 1967 to encourage creative activity and promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world.

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful used Ghana’s historic relationship with Russia to appeal for Russia’s support for Africa to have a voice on the global intellectual property platform.

The Director-General of Russia’s Federal Service for Intellectual Property, Mr Grigory Ivliev at the first meeting highlighted Russia’s availability to share best practices with Ghana on various aspects of Intellectual property management.

Mrs Owusu-Ekuful on her part expressed Ghana’s appreciation of the offer and spoke of the impact such engagements will have on Ghana’s youth in preparing them for the 4th Industrial Revolution era.

At the final meeting the Minister held with Russia’s deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and the President’s Special Envoy, Mr Mikhail Bodgdanov, Mrs Owusu-Ekuful assured the Russian Federation that Dr Kwakwa ’s intention if given the position as Director-General of WIPO, would be to promote fair representation of all regional blocks at the executive management level to facilitate broader global impact.

Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful was accompanied by Ghana’s Ambassador to Russia, Dr Lesley Akyaa Opoku Ware and other staff of Ghana’s Foreign Ministry.
