She also entreated mothers to always wash their hands thoroughly before preparing meals for their children and observe good personal hygiene to prevent infections among their children.

Presentation

Madam Baba gave the advice when the regional and Women's Councils of the UNICOF presented items worth GH¢1,105 to the Children's Ward of the Regional Hospital at Bolgatanga.

The items included toilet rolls, napkins, mopping materials, plastic buckets, toilet brushes, detergents, liquid soaps, detergents, a box of Heaven mosquito coils and two boxes of carbolic soaps, which were donated to help keep the Children's Ward clean, to complement the National Sanitation Day exercise. Members of the UNICOF also undertook a clean-up exercise at the Children's Ward to help keep the environment clean.

Interaction with mothers

Madam Baba said the gesture was also to afford women of UNICOF the opportunity to interact with mothers at the Children's Ward and to assure them that they cared about the welfare of children.

Presenting the items, the Regional Vice Chairman of the Regional Council of UNICOF, Mr Robert Kumpi, noted that the union decided to support the Children's Ward because children were the future leaders of the country.

According to him, it was the duty of parents, guardians, community members and the government to support the children to enable them to take the mantle of leadership in the future.

"Children are the most vulnerable hence we need to encourage and support them. I therefore urge parents to take good care of their children, particularly during this rainy season, to prevent them from being attacked by Malaria," he pointed out.

A medical doctor at the Children's Ward, Dr Ernestina Addah, who received the items, thanked the union for the gesture, and appealed to other public-spirited organisations to emulate the gesture for the betterment of children.
