Two communities to benefit from medical outreach

An eight-member medical team from the United States of America has begun a two-week health outreach programme at Mankranso and Adugyama, both in the Ahafo Ano South District in the Ashanti Region.

The team of medical doctors, nurses and other health professionals are expected to undertake a general health screening and surgical operations for more than 2000 people for free.

This is the second time the team is offering assistance in the Ahafo Ano South District.
Last year, the team operating under the Ghana HealthCare Volunteers in Georgia, presented a 40-footer container of medical supplies to the District Health Management Team (DHMT) to enhance effective health care.

Some of the cases they will attend to are general surgeries (hernia repairs, broken bone), gynaecological issues (menopause, fibroid) acute pediatrics and adult conditions, respiratory and heart conditions.

Commendation

Speaking at a ceremony to commence the health screening on Monday, the District Director of Health Services, Mr Reuben Bedzrah, lauded the medical team for the support.

He said the health screening would go a long way to complement efforts by the government and other stakeholders in getting quality health care to the people.

The district director said he was hopeful that many people, especially the needy, would take advantage of the exercise to improve on their health conditions.

Lack of information

Mr Bedzrah called on healthcare providers to work towards helping the general public get access to the right information on how and where they could get help when sick or ask relevant questions in connection with their health.

The President of the Ghana HealthCare Volunteers in Georgia, Mr Nicholas Fosu, assured the people of the team’s readiness to give out their best so that many people would get improved health care.

He lauded the DHMT for its support towards the mobilisation of the local people as well as the effort at getting so many people on board to ensure that health care got to the people.

He pledged the team’s preparedness to continue doing more for the people to complement the government’s efforts at providing quality health care for the people since attainment of quality health care was not the responsibility of the government alone.

The chief of Mankranso, Nana Safreh Adu Amankwatia, was full of praise for the DHMT for their role in bringing the medical team from the US to the community to provide the free health care to the people.

That, he said, would go a long way to relieve the people of the huge sums of money they would have paid had they had gone to the various health facilities in the district or in the region.

Background

The Ghana HealthCare Volunteers in Georgia in the United States of America is made up of Ghanaian health professionals who usually come together to embark on various outreaches in Ghana.

Their focus has always been to support people in needy or hard to reach areas with health care.

Apart from undertaking health screening, the members also raise funds to buy essential health equipment and distribute them to communities based on their request.
