Three Companies ordered to pay workers SSNIT contributions

The Accra District and Juvenile Court on Saturday ordered three companies to pay a total of GH¢127,684.26 to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) for failing to pay the Social Security contributions of their employees.

The court, presided over by Mrs Audrey Kwakuvi Tay, instructed Akosombo Textile Limited, Akotex Synthetics, and Global Market Leaders Ghana Limited (GML), to pay the underlisted amount.

Out of the total amount, ATL is to pay GH¢102,545.33, Akotex Synthetics will pay GH¢ 5980.68 and GML, GH¢19,158.25.

The prosecutor, Mr Prince Osei Owusu of the Adabraka Branch of the SSNIT, said the accused failed to pay the SSNIT contributions of their employees within the period of 2011 to 2013.

In the case of the GML Company Limited, the accused, Felix Adatey, the company’s director, was asked to pay GH¢4,000 up-front and make a monthly payment of GH¢ 2000.

After the ruling, Mr Adatey attempted to plead with the court to reconsider the payment scheme but Mrs Tay ordered him to comply with the order to which he accepted.

The Director of Akotex Synthetic, Mr Walter Esposito, pleaded guilty to the charge and implored the court to temper justice with mercy.  The representative of SSNIT told the court that the management of Akotex Synthetics had already accepted to pay the amount and had made  an initial deposit to the SSNIT.

In the case of ATL, the Finance Manager, Mr Asiedu Boateng, told the court that the amount which the company had failed to pay would be settled.

He, therefore, pleaded with the court to offer the company a flexible term of payment  with the SSNIT. He said already the amount had been reduced to GH¢ 62, 000 after the company had paid an initial deposit.

Mrs Tay, after considering their pleas, instructed them to make another down payment of GH¢10,000 and pay a monthly instalment of GH¢2,000 to the SSNIT.

They are to reappear before the court on September 7, this year.
