Thirty-eight lawyers called to the Bar

Thirty-eight new lawyers were yesterday called to the Bar, with a call on them to upgrade themselves periodically to enable them to compete effectively with their counterparts abroad.

Advising the new lawyers, the Chief Justice, Ms Justice Sophia Akuffo, said it was imperative for them to constantly study the law, locally and internationally, to keep abreast of the codes of ethics of the profession to remain globally relevant.

She urged them to desist from following the old order and rather, strive for the change that would improve their work, the legal profession and the country’s laws as a whole.

Justice Akuffo cautioned “many are the lawyers in the field, but many have fallen out of the cliff, therefore, you need to increase the level of standards in order not to fall out just as the others.”

Status quo

The Chief Justice told the lawyers that their profession was a noble one and for that reason they must live above reproach.

She charged them to hold the profession in high esteem in order to earn the “trust and respect” of the public.

She conceded that they would face challenges but advised them to respond to those challenges with integrity.

Justice Akuffo also encouraged the new lawyers not to hesitate to question the status quo, to promote quality delivery of justice in the country and urged families and friends of the new lawyers not to force them into untenable acts that would jeopardise their career.

Attorney-General

The Attorney-General, Ms Gloria Akuffo, for her part, advised the new lawyers to excel in their careers in their bid to hold the profession in high esteem.

She also charged them to work hard to move the society forward.

Ms Akuffo moved the motion for the new lawyers to be enrolled on the Roll of Lawyers, while the President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Mr Benson Nutsukpui, seconded the motion.
