The police are investigating events preceding the alleged assault of a 17-year-old student of Techiman Senior High School in the Bono East Region, following the questioning and subsequent granting of bail to two teachers involved in the incident.
The Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police Shaibu Osei, said interrogations had revealed that there was more to the incident than what was captured in a viral video showing the teachers assaulting the student.
In a statement issued by the Police Command last Sunday, the police said preliminary investigations indicated that the incident occurred on October 23, 2026, at about 4 p.m., when the two teachers allegedly accosted and assaulted the Form Three student on the school premises.
According to the police, the incident followed allegations that the senior student had attacked two Form One students and demanded money from them. The two junior students reportedly told school authorities that the senior student had taken them to an isolated place and bullied them after they refused to give him the money. They were said to have escaped and reported the incident to the school authorities.
The Daily Graphic also gathered from the school that the two teachers approached the senior student to caution him over the allegations, but he allegedly resisted their intervention belligerently, leading to the assault. A video, which circulated widely on social media, only showed the teachers physically assaulting the student, with one of them stepping on his head.
The two teachers, identified as Ameyaw Adusa, 44, an Information and Communications Technology teacher, and Jerry Jones Owusu Bekoe, 37, an English Language teacher, were granted police bail last Monday, with sureties.
Before incident
DCOP Osei told the Daily Graphic that the police were investigating the precursor circumstances leading to the assault to establish what happened before the incident. "We realised during the interrogation that there was more to it before the incident happened. So we are going down to find out how the whole thing happened from that stage to where we are now, so that we can get a broad idea as to what really happened," he said.
DCOP Osei said the teachers were handed over to the police by the school authorities on November 1, 2026, following a request for their assistance with investigations. He said the police interrogated them and took their caution statements before deciding to detain them and put them before court the following day. He, however, said because the court did not sit on November 2 due to the ongoing Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana strike, the police granted them bail that evening.
The commander said the police were also investigating allegations that the senior student had bullied two Form One students and demanded money from them.
Juvenile Justice Act
DCOP Osei said if the student was found culpable, the police would apply the Juvenile Justice Act in dealing with the matter. "The law has a way to deal with juvenile offenders. So we will go by the Juvenile Act and if he is also found culpable of having bullied or assaulted some of his mates, the law will also take its course," he said.
He stressed that the police would not prejudge the outcome of the investigations, adding that medical evidence and witness statements were being gathered to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident. "What you see may not be what really happened. So that is why we are conducting the investigation to affirm or corroborate what really happened in the video," he said. DCOP Osei assured that anyone found culpable would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Discharged
He said the victim had been treated and discharged at the Holy Family Hospital in Techiman. DCOP Osei said the police had arranged psychological support from a clinical psychologist.
When contacted, the Techiman Municipal Director of Education, Reverend Isaac Amankwah, said when he visited the victim at the hospital, he complained of a major injury at the back of his ear, but his condition was stable.
