The rationale is to green the metropolis to improve the health of the people.

This was announced by the Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Alhaji Rahman Gundadow when President John Dramani Mahama inaugurated the Tamale Central Market project Sunday on day two of his "Changing Lives" tour campaign in the Northern Region.

Alhaji Gundadow said the trees would be planted mostly at public places including schools, hospitals and parks.

Touching on the market, he said, the 152 market units would enhance economic activities in the metropolis and also ensure economic independence of women.

PRESIDENT

President Mahama commended the TaMA and said he would hold the MCE to his promise to ensure that the 20 million trees were planted and grown.

He said many a time, people only plant the trees without ensuring their growth, thus leaving most of them to wither and die.

He said the tree growing was a laudable idea and that most of the 100,000 youths who would be engaged under the Youth Employment Programme (YEP) next year would be engaged in tree growing.

He said the youth who would be engaged under the YEP would be supported with tricycles and polytanks to nurture the trees until they grow.

MARKET

President Mahama said the Northern Region and Tamale in particular had become a vital economic point in the Savannah zones of the country and needed the necessary infrastructure to ensure economic stability.

"Tamale is becoming a gateway to economic activities in the Savannah zones and we will put facilities to encourage business activities", he stated.

President Mahama noted that the inauguration of the GHC1.2 million market would encourage business activities in metropolis.

He said people from the neigbouring countries all come to the metropolis to transact business.

President Mahama pledged his commitment to improve the lives of the people in the region and the country as a whole.
